Job Groupings at U of T
The University of Toronto has grouped administrative union, non-union and managerial positions into 20 different job groupings. Brief descriptors of each of the Job Groupings have been provided to outline the type of work each area includes. It should be noted that positions at all levels, including senior managerial positions, can be found within each job grouping.
Advancement and Alumni
Positions in this group are involved in advancement activities at the University at all pay levels, including managerial. These positions perform fundraising, donor relations, donor recognition, alumni relations and advancement research activities.
Arts and Culture
Positions in this group are involved in cultural, visual arts, and performance arts activities at the University at all levels, including managerial. These include curatorial positions, box office and theatre operations positions, and performance related roles.
Positions in this group provide administrative support indirectly related to other job families, and are at all pay levels, including managerial. These positions include business officer roles up to the Chief Administrative Officer level, such as executive assistant roles, administrative and secretarial services, clerical and duplication support, data analyst roles and data entry support.
Positions in this group are involved in media relations and communications activities at the University at all pay levels, including managerial. These positions include communications, PR, marketing and writing as well as editing, graphic design and technical media specialists.
Positions in this group are responsible for running daycare or childcare related services, centres or drop-in programs.
Positions in this group are responsible for coordinating or managing facilities and services across the University. This includes grounds, property and facilities management roles, telecommunications positions, caretaking roles, construction and engineering related positions, trades services roles, waste and environmental positions and utilities related roles.
Positions in this group are primarily involved in financial-related activities not directly related to other job families, and are at all pay levels, including managerial. This would include positions involved in financial analysis, accounting, budgeting, financial planning, procurement, insurance and risk, internal audit and real estate.
Governance and Policy
Positions in this group are involved in activities directly related to University governance and/or have a significant role in policy analysis, design or interpretation and are not directly related to other job families.
Health and Well Being
Positions in this group are involved in providing services that are directly related to individuals’ physical or mental health and overall well being. Positions would include all health-care professionals across the University.
Positions in this group are involved in event planning, catering activities and/-or food and beverage services across the University.
HR and Equity
Positions in this group are involved in human resource and equity related activities across the University. HR related positions would include roles in labour relations, organizational development and learning, payroll, pensions and benefits, compensation and HR generalist and assistant roles. Equity positions include roles associated with the promotion of equity, diversity and inclusivity at the University.
Positions in this group are information technology related positions at all pay levels, including managerial. This would include IT support roles, developer related roles, database administrator roles and information system analyst roles.
Positions in this group are involved in providing legal related services and advice within the University.
Positions in this group include library related roles that may be specialized in a specific area like access, acquisitions, cataloguing, reference, resource sharing, and preservation, or may be more general in nature and provide numerous areas of service within a library. Other positions within this group include archivist and bibliographic specialists.
Positions in this group are primarily involved in providing administrative support to research at the University. Positions are from all pay levels, including managerial, and provide support to the research community through interpreting and creating research-related policies, supporting research ethics protocols, facilitating research grant applications, administering research contracts and intellectual property, and liaising with funding and government agencies.
Research and Teaching
Positions in this group are directly involved in research and/or teaching work. Positions are from all pay levels, including managerial, and are located at a variety of settings including labs, animal facilities, and hospitals. They may have a class-room/ teaching lab focus or may be more involved in pure research. Positions include Research Officers, Lab-Technicians, Microscopy Technicians, Animal Lab/-Surgical Technicians, Teaching Technicians and Lab Administrators.
Positions in this group are involved in ensuring the safety and/or security of others in the University Community. This includes police services, prevention services, and health and safety related positions like fire prevention roles, and environmental health and safety roles.
Student Academic Experience
Positions in this group are responsible for the academic element of a student’s experience. This includes all aspects of the registrarial function, continuing education, admissions and awards areas, and academic program administration. Positions are from all pay levels, including managerial, and range from graduate/undergraduate coordinator roles, to learning support roles, to registrarial administrative roles, to student placement roles and to program administrative roles.
Student Life Experience
Positions in this group impact a student’s experience outside of the classroom. This includes all aspects of their extra and co-curricular activities from residence, to athletics, to career centres, to clubs, to associations, etc. Positions are from all pay levels including managerial and include student leadership development roles, administrative support roles, career development roles, and program development roles.
Positions in this group include a variety of technical/-craft service roles at all pay levels, including managerial. These positions are required to design, fabricate and/or repair materials for research labs and departments. Positions include Engineering Technologist, Craftsperson, Dental Technician, Horticulturist, Draftsperson, Glassblower and Cartographer.
