In your experience, how does moving around the University help advance your career?

« Back to Previous Page

There is no ’down side’ to gaining experience from a wide range of areas within the University. This knowledge is always helpful – whether it is specific information or ’simply’ knowledge about who to contact for what. These experiences matter and have a significant impact on your marketability within the institution.

I challenge the ideas of linear ’progress’. We work at an extraordinarily diverse and complex institution. By building multiple connections, you are learning about how students, staff and faculty might each uniquely intersect with the enormous range of services, academics, programs and spaces. This sideways wisdom allows you freedom. It also diversifies your work experience and makes others think, ”Huh! That’s an interesting step. Tell me more about that.”

So wander. Wander far and wander near. It’s an amazing learning environment for us all.
